iX-factory GmbH and Surfix BV join forces

May 22, 2012
iX-factory GmbH from Dortmund, Germany and Surfix BV from Wageningen, the Netherlands, announced joined forces in the field of surface modified lab-on-a-chip applications. A lab-on-a-chip (LOC) is a device that integrates one or more laboratory functions on a single chip from only millimeters to a few square centimeters in dimensions. Typical benefits of LOCs are the reduced costs, low consumption of reagents, faster mixing and heating, better control of processes, and the high degree of automation.

For instance in pharmacy and genomics experiments can be performed simultaneously on large scale, resulting in more efficient discovery of new drugs and the accelerated unraveling of the human genome. The combination of surface modification technologies now enables numerous new opportunities in these fields. By local surface modification with high spatial resolution, even after bonding of the chip, the surface properties inside the LOCs can easily be controlled. A wide variety of terminal functionalities, like complex (bio)organic molecules such as antibodies, DNA, proteins, cells, catalysts and antifouling moieties can be implemented and allows integration of precious and complex chemical, biological and physical processes into LOCs devices.
