The product portfolio of the business unit Medical Applications of Berliner Glas at its location in Berlin includes multichip prism assemblies (RGB and VIS/NIR), autoclavable lenses, and highly complex 3D measuring cameras for digital dental imprinting. The demand to precisely join complex optical, mechanical, and electronic systems requires the highest level of pretreatment and assembly technology. This means that even the smallest defects are not permitted in 4K image sensors. The response to this challenge includes clean rooms of the highest cleanliness classes, cleaning systems (ultrasonic and megasonic), and plasma pretreatment.

Berliner Glas has developed a versatile assembly device for positioning in the μm range. This system can be used to simultaneously align electro-optical components, such as image sensors, in six degrees of freedom better than 1 μm each, and fix them permanently at this accuracy. Moreover, the company can optimally adjust four lens systems to one another at the same time. The strength of the new device is the flexible layout that can be retrofitted quickly and inexpensively. The system is therefore exceptionally well suited for the small and medium unit quantities typical to medical technology, between several 100 and 1000 pieces per year.
