Precision metal mirror for aerospace

The aerospace industry increasingly needs precision mirrors or components, that have a high mechanical and thermal stability. These necessary attributes can primarily be reached with metal mirrors in a selected material combination.

However, a decisive factor for the long-term stability of a lightweight mirror is the heat treatment, which is handled accurately with CNC-controlled temperature cabinets at Kugler. The metal mirrors can be produced with ultra-precision turning and drilling machines using natural diamond tools.

Kugler can produce planspheric or aspheric contours up to 1.5 m with geometric accuracies of less than 0.1 µm/100 mm on aero-borne or hydrostatically borne turning and drilling centers. Depending on the geometry the roughness of the “cut” surface is ≤ 2 nm Ra so that a mechanical finishing is not necessary in most cases.
