#skills4chips

Jan 1, 2025

skills4chips is a nationwide flagship project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
The aim of the project is to train skilled workers for the microelectronics and microsystems technology sector through tailored training and continuing education opportunities, thereby helping to meet the growing demand of the German chip industry.

Microtec Academy: Shaping the Future Workforce in Microelectronics

On November 1, 2024, a groundbreaking project for securing skilled labor in the field of microelectronics was launched – skills4chips. Through the Microtec Academy, the project addresses the increasing demand for qualified professionals who will contribute to boosting semiconductor production in Europe.

The Microtec Academy is being established as a national educational institution offering training opportunities for all qualification levels – from career changers to experienced specialists and executives.

Why is "skills4chips" important?

More chips “Made in Europe”: The European Union aims to increase the share of semiconductors produced in Europe from 10% to 20% by 2030. This goal is supported by the European Chips Act, which provides for increased promotion of regional semiconductor manufacturing.

Expanding these production capacities requires a well-trained workforce – and this is exactly where the skills4chips project comes in. The BMFTR is providing 12 million euros in funding over four years to strengthen the skills base in microelectronics and microsystems technology.

Shaping the Future of the Semiconductor Industry – Together

The skills4chips consortium, coordinated by the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH), brings many years of experience in training and continuing education in high-tech fields.

Results from BMBF- and BMFTR-funded projects such as BM = x³ and the Microelectronics Academy are being integrated to build on proven initiatives and expand them with new offerings, such as modular qualifications and special courses for career changers.
