They make movies and play music or even serve as mini video projectors – which all costs a lot of energy. How nice would it be if mobile phones had a runtime of a whole year without the need to charge them in between? Polytec GmbH will point out how metrology can contribute to this at the international trade fair MicroTechnology/HANNOVER MESSE from April 20 to 24, 2009, in Hanover, Germany. Here Polytec introduces its measuring instrument UHF-120 to the world public for the first time. The ultra-high frequency vibrometer helps manufacturers in optimizing mobile phones concerning their energy efficiency.
Key for this are, amongst others, the so-called SAW filters (SAW = Surface Acoustical Wave). These tiny components convert electric waves into acoustic surface waves, whereas certain mechanical properties determine the filters’ quality. The Polytec metrology tool shall help avoiding strays, which cost a lot of energy, in the future. It characterizes the waves with their high frequencies and small amplitudes with the necessary precision for the first time.
The ultra-high frequency vibrometer UHF-120 measures the mechanical vibrations up to several hundred megahertz. “The UHF-120 shows what happens in smallest parts of the mobile phone. Beside the frequency it also analyzes the form of the oscillation. If strays, which cost extra energy, are detected, the developers can locate the weak points and eliminate them. The overall goal is to be able to run mobile phones for one year without charging“, explains Polytec Product Manager Dr. Wilfried Bauer.
Polytec shows the UHF-120 at the Product Market “Micro, Nano & Materials” of the IVAM Microtechnology Network in hall 6, E16. Here, about 60 companies and institutes present innovative high-tech products, high-tech developments and high-tech services. Further information on the IVAM joint pavilion is available at www.ivam.de/index.php?content=messe_details&id=357&clear=2; details on the UHF-120 can be found at www.polytec.de.
