STATICE develops dental membrane for a better integration of dental implants

STATICE has been working for five years on the development of new devices made by electrospinning. This process allows the manufacturing of fibrous biomaterials which are very attractive for tissue regeneration. The fibrous structure tailors cell interactions.

Innovative dental membrane is inserted between implant and gum tissue

STATICE has recently published a proof of concept for an electrospun dental membrane in the international journal "Polymers". This membrane aims to improve the integration of dental implants. It is set up between the implant and the gingival tissue. Its fibrous structure should contribute to cell colonization and release an antibacterial agent to prevent infection. STATICE has developed this membrane by integrating not only technical requirements (adequate mechanical strength for handling, release of the antibacterial agent over several days in a physiological environment) but also industrial requirements (manufacturing scale-up, packaging) and regulatory requirements (free of residual solvents, sterilization).

Electrospinning enables biomaterials with specific properties

The membrane, which meets these specifications, is made of two copolymers (poly(L-lactic-co-gycolic acid) (PLGA, 85:15) and poly(L-lactic acid-co-ɛ-caprolactone) (PLC, 70:30)), an antibacterial agent, Chlorhexidine (CHX), complexed with β cyclodextrin (CD). This article shows that the release of CHX, the mechanical properties, the fiber diameter and the absence of residual solvent depend on the composition of the membrane and the electrospinning parameters. Membranes are sterilized by gamma irradiation without any significant change in their properties. A first in vivo evaluation has been performed.

This membrane illustrates the potential of the electrospinning to develop new innovative medical devices, a technology offered by STATICE to its customers.
