The strategic partnership brings together Epiphany Design’s platform-agnostic photonic IC design expertise and Chilas Lasers’ experience in developing and manufacturing ultra-narrow linewidth laser systems. While Epiphany Design focuses on hybrid laser architecture and integration into custom PIC layouts, Chilas is responsible for laser system realization, engineering, and manufacturing.
Integrating lasers into photonic chips remains one of the key technical challenges in modern photonics. It requires not only advanced chip design but also a deep understanding of laser physics, control electronics, stabilization and overall system optimization. By combining complementary engineering capabilities, the two companies aim to simplify and accelerate the development of such solutions.
A central outcome of the collaboration is a demonstration system based on the “Hybrid Laser Design Module”. This module provides a ready-to-integrate laser building block for photonic integrated circuits. Instead of designing a hybrid laser from scratch, developers can adopt a validated architecture and integrate it directly into their PIC layouts.
Two demonstration systems are available for evaluation: one operating at 1550 nm, targeting applications such as telecom, coherent communications and sensing, and another at 685 nm for visible-wavelength applications including life sciences and metrology. These systems allow engineers to test laser performance in their own setups before committing to custom integration, helping to shorten development cycles and time-to-market.
