Smart Photonic Solutions for Industry, Research, and Space: LZH at LASER World of PHOTONICS 2025

Jun 18, 2025

This week, IVAM member Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) will showcase cutting-edge photonic technologies at the LASER World of PHOTONICS in Munich. The focus is on robust laser systems for satellite communication, large-scale additive manufacturing, laser-based innovations for the hydrogen economy, precise optical component characterization – and the integration of artificial intelligence into photonic processes.

Precision Optics and Ultrafast Laser Processing

One highlight is a new measurement system for the customized characterization of optical components. By measuring the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), the LZH determines the durability of optics up to 300 mm in diameter. These insights enable the development of high-performance optics, such as those required in fusion research. In the field of ultrafast laser processing, the LZH presents a wide range of techniques for structuring, modifying, and functionalizing materials and thin films with exceptional precision – opening up new possibilities in integrated sensing, optics, and microelectronics.

Laser Technologies for Communication, Manufacturing, and Maritime Applications

For secure and fast satellite communication, the LZH develops energy-efficient fiber amplifier systems using in-house fabricated components. The institute also presents compact photonic systems for quantum key distribution – a foundation for secure data transmission. In large-scale additive manufacturing, the LZH demonstrates how Directed Energy Deposition (DED-LB/M) enables the production of complex metal parts, with applications in shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, and plant construction. Intelligent process monitoring and innovative robotic software ensure high precision and repeatability.

A special highlight at the booth is a sustainable laser demonstrator for removing biofouling from ship hulls. Visitors can also learn about novel laser-based joining techniques for steel and aluminum – especially relevant for the maritime sector – as well as processes for efficient hydrogen electrolysis and combustion.

Artificial Intelligence for Future Photonics

Across all fields, LZH harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to optimize processes and enhance quality assurance. The integration of AI and photonics opens new avenues for innovation – making LZH a key player in shaping the future of smart manufacturing and communication technologies.
